E heti Tóra-szakaszunk a szombatév fogalmával és törvényeivel kezdődik. A hetiszakasz végén található rész pedig azt mondja, hogy őrizzük a sábeszt – Ibn Ezra szerint ez a szombatévre utal, nem pedig a heti szombatokra. Felmerül a kérdés, hogy miért nem az áll ott, hogy „Smitá”? Talán azért, mert a Smitát egy „nagyobb szombat” tükrében kell értelmeznünk, mely irányt és célt jelöl ki számunkra. Tudjuk, hogy az Örökkévaló a semmiből teremtette a világot, ezzel pedig még inkább hangsúlyozva van, hogy bár Ő a semmiből hozta létre a világot, azt mégis céllal alkotta nekünk. 

Hetente van egy nap, amikor megmutatjuk, hogy lelkünk nem veszett el a fizikai világban, amikor arra törekszünk, hogy közelebb kerüljünk az Örökkévalóhoz. Egy nap, amikor csak a Tóra-tanulás örömének szentelhetjük magunkat. Ez alapján a szombat év sem egy szünetet jelent, hanem egy igazán aktív évet!

A Smitát a Szináj-hegyén tanították őseinknek. A Smitá pedig megmutatja, hogy a Tóra-adásra úgy tekintsünk, mint a teremtés céljára.

Our Parasha begins with the concept and laws of the sabbatical year. The verse at the end of the Parasha which tells us to guard the Shabbos is according to Ibn Ezra, referring to the Sabbatical years, not to the weekly Shabbos. One might ask, why doesn’t it just say “Shmittah”? Perhaps it is because we are being told to view Shmittah in its definition of being a „greater Shabbos”, something which attests to direction and purpose, and during which we are enjoined to busy ourselves with that purpose. We know that HaShem created the world ex nihilo; we are stressing that He created the world for a purpose.

One day a week we show that we are not lost in the physical aspects of this world, but that we recognise HaShem’s rule and strive to draw closer to HaShem. And on the day when we attest to a purpose, it’s vital that we involve ourselves with the purpose: studying Torah. Shmittah contains the same idea One year in seven we are free from becoming absorbed in our work. In order to enable us to dedicate a year to the purpose of creation: learning Torah. The sabbatical year isn’t a year off – it’s a year on!
